Congratz Obama!
Oct 10th, 2009 | By Vidar Daatland | Category: Captain's quarters, Media, Politics, SocietyThe days when it was enough to plant seeds, sell mobile phones or make a documentary seems to be over. You now actually have to do something better than that to deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. They gave it to Kal-El, the most powerfull man in the world. Mr. Barack Hussein Obama.
The leader of the Nobel Committee (Torbjørn Jagland) didn’t even manage to fulfill the announcement before people reacted. Social media is good tool at that. Showing reactions that is. Unfortunately not good at showing too much of the reflecting kind. People don’t stop to think about it, they tweet. So suddenly my twitter-feeds were full of it. Reactions. Mindless reactions.
“Scandalous” … “Bizzare” … “Shamefull!”
Why can’t people just…. shut up and think about it for at least fifteen minutes (I mean that in a nice way). “OMG, big news I haz to comment now! I haz to be first!”.
Thing is: The Nobel Committee has five very knowledgeable members. Five old people, ranging from what one can stigmatize as “a commie”, to a “capitalist pig” and to a couple of “liberal pussies”. They have tons of experience and they’ve been working on evaluating the nominees for months I presume. And apparently the decision was unanimous.
Then the news hit and the worlds 20-something hit the web with a wave of criticism. Apparently they know better. They, with their “enormous amount of knowledge” and a whooping five minutes of using the power of the brain (if it was so long) conclude that this is “a scandal” and whatnot.
And I thought I had a big ego (for the record, I do).
You got to ask, “who are they to know better?”
The answer is that in most cases it’s just a guy og girl wanting to join the mob that has assembled. That may be insulting to many, but then again I don’t expect people who talk before they think to be humble and modest. They’ll be to busy reacting…
Now I don’t say it’s right to give Obama the prize. To be honest, I have no fucking clue as to who deserves it most. My first though was a big whoopdidoo “WTF?” Honestly I though I could win this year, it’s not like the bar was raised so high previously. So I seldom pay attention to my first thoughts, and neither should you.
I know that the criteria is “…during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind [..] the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”
I must say, in the preceding year few strike me as having done more than Obama. But please enlighten me. I’m still thinking about it, I seemingly do not have the speedy-Gonzales brain-capacity going for me.
And the real irony is that all the people that think that less than a year is enough time to criticize him for what he’s done (or not done) have the balls of double-morals (those balls are so nice, don’t you think?) to claim that these months are not long enough to conclude that he deserves the prize. Come on people, if that’s not throwing bricks in a gigantic glass-house, what is?
This is no lifetime-achievement award as so many seem to think. Obama is all about dialog. And you know what? That’s just what “work for fraternity between nations” is about. Diplomacy is dialog. Getting rid of the old “enemy images” and try to get us out of that old circle and in to a new and hopefully brighter one. Read the announcement and think about it. Has he done what they say he has?
Now, the next couple of days will go by with all the noisy brainless-twitter mob-storm with the bloodsucking leaders marching in front (yes, I’m talking about journalists. They live to be first, so naturally they think after they type). Then we will hopefully get some constructive criticism from people who still have the power to wait and reflect. That I would want to read and/or listen to. All the garbage noise from the “reactionists” I can do without.
Oh, and by the way, if your reading this Obama (I know you are, who doesn’t?): Congratz. You now really have something to live up to. The Nobel Committee has taken it upon themselves to take your word for what it’s hopefully worth. And with that applied a lot of pressure on you. We’re all watching and hopefully people will join in this quest for world peace (But I fear we’ll be to busy tweeting and checking Facebook).
And for all you who think I just wrote about Obama and Nobel peace Prize. Not really. He’s just the president after all, there are bigger issues at hand. Think abstract. Think about thinking before reacting and the mobster-reacting phenomenon (dare I say side-effect) that follows the greatness of the social web. There, I just became arrogant feeding you with the spoon. Please forgive me.
